5/19/25: Mom Handing Out Pieces
Mom is still pulling off parts to feed the owlets, even though they are almost as large as she is. This video clip from the middle of a 15-minute feeding shows one of the owlets swallowing a tail (starts about midway).te feeding shows one of the owlets swallowing a tail (starts about midway).
5/21/25: They’re On Their Way
Terry predicted that they would be leaving about now, and he was right!
Three owlets on the loose! Within 12 minutes, three restless owlets made the leap on schedule. Here are three clips of the three departures.
With a lot of fanfare, out goes one owlet.
The next one waits in the door, then goes. Number three then gets in line for its exit.
Number three heads out.
And mom didn’t forget about the two remaining. There is some nice footage of mom feeding one of the chicks.
So, three hatched the first night (see 4/23/25), and three leave 29 days later. The final two should be out very soon.5/23/25:
5/23/25…And Then There Were None.
The last owlet (#5) left the box on May 22 at the “usual” time of about 8:30, like the previous owlet (#4) the night before. So we now have an empty nest box. Here is the last video of the season showing the remaining owlet at the hole looking out when the mom arrives with a snack for him. He departs the box about 10 minutes later to join his siblings in the real world.
They are probably still in the neighborhood while the parents teach the youngsters to hunt, so there may be a sighting or two before they disappear for the season.
Congratulations to the parents for rearing a brood of five little owls to fledging!
Now that the owlets are fledged, have a look at the updated statistics for the past six years.
