Getting Ready to Fly 2026

The owlets have grown so fast, and they are getting curious about the outside world. Scroll down to see earliest posts.

Empty nesters! 5/28/26

The fourth and last owlet left two days after the previous (#3).

The fourth owlet had been in solitary confinement for 48 hours and was very restless in this clip from just before sunset. He would leave in less than an hour, and two days after the third owlet departed.

The back story to this skipped departure: I think the infertile egg was egg #4 and this owlet is actually #5. Like almost all previous owlets, his siblings were 29 days old when they left the box.

Here’s the updated data from all the years.

Fledging: Movin’ On Out

Right on schedule, the owlets have been leaving the box.

The first on left on May 24, and one owlet has left every night.

The activity has shifted to outside the box as the owlets prepare to leave. Dad feeds them from the outside as they work up the courage to take their first flights. The stills are from my trail cam, the video is from Terry’s.

Some owlets are waiting for the moment.

The first to emerge is learning how to navigate its world.

Too many wings, not enough room. Or: trying to fly in a box.

The owlets are spending a lot of time looking out the hole, with sometimes three at once trying to get a view of the outside world they will jump into over the next few days.

“Let me out!” An owlet is blocking the hole so mom can’t leave. She finally prods him or pulls him back in. (A long video.)

I expect the first owlet to leave in the next few days.

More Fuel Deliveries

5/19/26

The owlets are too full from previous feedings by mom to take a mouse delivery by the male. He’s just a delivery guy and expects someone to take it. He doesn’t actually feed from it like the female does, so the mouse gets dropped and he leaves.

Just some gratuitous video of cute owlet faces!
